As students come of age and finally achieve getting their driver’s license and a car, having this new freedom comes with responsibility. It is important to understand the depth of the newfound privilege. A vehicle is not something to be taken lightly. When you get behind the wheel, you are putting the lives of others and yourself in your hands.

The school parking lot can be a dangerous place. It is important to be patient and wait for pedestrians to cross the road before pressing the gas pedal. Looking both ways before proceeding with your vehicle is necessary at all times. Make sure your mirrors are properly adjusted and be aware of your surroundings to avoid accidents.

If you have experience with driving, you may know that people often disregard the laws of the road. The violations of these laws include speeding (even if it’s only five miles over the speed limit), not using turn signals, making illegal turns, texting/calling, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and tailgating. These might seem like minor details to pay attention to when on the road, but they cause accidents every year. Too many people get injured or die because of simple but deadly mistakes like this.

Remember, wherever you are going is not so important that you should put people’s lives at risk. Maintaining a calm attitude while driving is essential. If you get frustrated with another driver when behind the wheel, resist the urge to honk your horn or tailgate the person. This will only cause more problems and make the other driver angry.

Keep in mind that the aftermath of a car wreck can be even worse than the wreck itself, if you make it out alive. There are legal processes, a lot of money, and court cases involved. Rushing or being lazy is not worth the risk and trouble, so please remember to drive safely both on and off campus.
