North Point mall has faced major changes over the course of the past few years. Like other malls, it has struggled in recent years with the loss of anchor store Sears and others stores like Lucky Brand Jeans, Hallmark, Charlotte Russe and Apple.
One of North Point’s biggest competitors is Avalon. Avalon is an outdoor shopping center that is located not too far from North point. That center has many stores that are fierce competitors to North Point, such as the Apple store, Urban Outfitters and Regal Cinemas.
But North Point plans on giving Avalon a run for its money with redevelopment plans to change it to a residential space in the near future. Plans call for the empty space that once was Sears to be turned into 328 rental apartments and 24,000 square feet of shops and restaurants. The developer also plans 15.67 acres of civic/amenity space, including a playground, sports field, plaza/event area, and trails for pedestrians and bicycles.
Senior Taj Branch said that North Point needs an upgrade badly. Branch said that he doesn’t enjoy shopping at North Point because “the mall doesn’t have a variety of clothing items that I would want to buy, so I go to Lenox instead.”
“There’s nothing for me to buy, I can do it all online,” senior Regina Rosete said when asked if she shops at North Point. “I’m looking forward to the upgrade, it sounds like it’s gonna be really nice,” she added.
