On October 18, the newest Nintendo fitness game, Ring Fit Adventure, will be released. This is the most recent first party fitness game since the Wii Fit series. This game utilizes a new apparatus, called the Ring-con, which is a ring with one Joy-con in it and a leg strap where the other Joy-con goes.

Nintendo fitness games began in 2007 with the release of Wii Fit. This game was a collection of exercises and mini-games that uses the Wii’s motion controls and a new device invented for the game, called the Wii Fit Balance Board. The series morphed into the Wii U, but with the new console there was a lack of a fitness game.

The new game, Ring Fit Adventure, differs greatly from the previous games because it is not just a collection of minigames. This game has story-based, role playing game (RPG) structure unlike Wii Fit along with minigames. There is leveling, monster fighting, and exploring. The Ring-con is used to perform attack and blocks with a weapon triangle based on different types of exercises.

This new game is shaping up to be a refreshing take on a genre that can get stale. Minigames can reach a point of repetition because it is the same game over and over. A story, unlocking new moves, and interesting gameplay make this game one to look forward to. On top of that, the game is $80 compared to Wii Fit’s original $90 price tag. The Accolade thinks it is a step in the right direction, and it will be interesting to see how the game turns out.
