Fries are a very simple yet delicious side that are universally loved, and there are as many varieties as there are restaurants.  From regular straight cut fries from McDonald’s to unique, waffle cut fries from Chick-Fil-A, and gourmet seasoned fries from Potato Corner, the Accolade set out to try as many of them as possible. We visited local restaurants and establishments such as Steak ‘n Shake, Potato Corner,McDonald’s, Zaxby’s, Burger King, and Chick-Fil-A. Our first stop: Steak ‘n Shake.

Steak ‘n Shake – 7.5/10

Steak ‘n Shake is well-known for their delicious burgers, as well as their mouth-watering cajun seasoning on their fries. We ordered three different styles of fries: regular fries, cheese fries, and cajun fries. These were a lot different from the other places we tried. Their fries were very thin, but they were also very crunchy. There wasn’t that much seasoning on the fries when they came out, but they also had a bottle of seasoning on the table for us, so we were able to add more right then and there instead of requesting the kitchen to put more. The temperature was perfect, but as far as salt goes, they didn’t have that much on there. Overall, these fries were pretty decent.

Potato Corner- 9/10

This was the highest rated fry place due to the scrumptious seasoning, freshness, amount, and overall taste. As the name implies, this place specifically caters to the frenchiest fry. They had lots of different forms of potato including original straight fries, tater tots, curly fries, waffle fries, and sweet potato fries. They also had an abundance of different seasonings to which you can choose to coat your fries including sour cream and onion, cheddar cheese, garlic and parmesan, cinnamon and sugar, and barbecue. We ordered the smallest size they had, and got the sour cream and onion seasoning. The container was filled all the way to the brim, and was practically falling out. They were warm and fluffy, and each fry was coated with the perfect amount of seasoning. It wasn’t as crunchy as other fries, but everything else about it made up for it. We rated the Potato Corner a nine out of ten.

Chick-fil-A – 8/10

This was the second highest fry establishment for us. Their fries come in the form of a waffle, and there are a variety of sauces you can choose to dip them in some of which are their signature Chick-fil-A sauce, polynesian sauce, sweet sriracha sauce, buttermilk ranch, and avocado ranch. We chose polynesian sauce, which is a red sweet and sour sauce. We ordered a medium fry, and they came out warm and golden. Each one was incredibly crunchy, and perfectly salty. A great classic for when you’re craving some fries, and want them quick.

Steak ‘n Shake – 7.5/10

McDonalds – 7.5/10

McDonald’s: a classic that is loved by many. We ordered a medium fry, and it came out so warm. The fries were perfectly golden and salted. There was nothing special about these; they were just normal straight cut fries, but they were so delicious. Each one was incredibly crunchy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. Easy to get, and easy to eat. We rated these the same as Steak ‘n Shake fries.

Zaxby’s – 6/10

Zaxby’s is more known for their various chicken dishes, but their fries are also very popular. They were crinkle cut, and had a kind of spicy seasoning dashed on top of them. They were a little soggy when they came out which was disappointing. They weren’t as crunchy as we had hoped, but they were well salted. Not too bad, but definitely not as good as the other places.

Burger King – 2/10

Burger King was a complete letdown. We ordered a medium fry, and they came out looking a bit under-cooked. They were not warm at all nor were they crunchy. There was almost no salt or flavor to the fry either. These were so bad that we were unable to eat more than a couple before we threw the rest away.
